Microsoft may have stopped the downloads for their beta version of Windows 7 but their upcoming next PC operatiing system is already getting some support from graphics chip maker Nvidia. This week the company announced it has released a new set of their GeForce beta drivers specifically for Windows 7 users.

Even though Battlefield Heroes is still in a closed beta test, the development team at Digital Illusions is looking to the future in terms of the game's final public release. This week the free-to-play FPS' web site announced plans to offer players a way to own their own dedicated servers for the game. The site revealed a number of different companies that will be offering ways for players to purchase and run dedicated servers for the game. Those companies are currently offering a limited number of beta keys as well in various contest giveaways. Some are already offering special pre-order discount deals on their servers. There's still no word on when Battlefield Heroes will officially launch.

Later this month the Independent Games Festival will hold its 2009 edition at the Game Developers Conference. Recently the organization behind the largest event supporting independent game creation announced an upgrade to its Seumas McNally Grand Prize. Normally the prize would be $20,000 to the development team behind the game that wins but thanks to a sponsorship from Mountain Dew the grand prize amount has increased to $30,000 for the 2009 edition

Midway's financial problems are causing the once might game publisher to think about selling off its biggest IP; the Mortal Kombat fighting game franchise. In court documents found by NetDockets, the company is offering " 29 eligible employees" bonuses if certain milestones are met One of those milestones has been met by selling the publishing and distribution for Wheelman to Ubisoft. But Midway is also offering bonuses if they can sell off the Mortal Kombat franchise or submit plans to reorganize or even liquidate Midway. If all the milestones are met, Midway's lucky 29 employees will share in a total bonus package of $3,755,000. We wonder how the rest of Midway's employees and the company's creditors feel about that. Oh, and Variety reports that an unnamed game designer for Midway (who is almost certainly Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon) is getting slightly over $1 milliion in bonuses for the past six months.

It's been a while since the QuakeCon web site has gotten an extensive design revamp but this week the site that promotes id Software's annual free LAN event/convention got a new look that's far more slick than the previous design. The revamp also includes an all new logo for the event that's also much different than previous versions. While the event is free to attend as always, registration is required, especially if you want to be in the massive BYOC area. Registration begins at 9:30 pm ET on Friday. The event itself will be held on August 13-16 and once again will be held at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas. We expect that id will be showing off upcoming game projects such as Rage and maybe (if John Carmack feels up to it) the fourth Doom game.
